Associates of Cape Cod, Inc. (ACC) is one of the worlds largest manufacturers of products developed to detect and quantify gram-negative bacterial endotoxins and (1 à 3)-ẞ-D-glucans. Their products are used worldwide by leading pharmaceutical and medical device companies to ensure the safety of their parenteral drugs, biological products and medical devices uses their products worldwide. ACC’s goal is to provide the best products and services as we all the best technical support and customer service in the industry to enhance the productivity and efficiency of all their customers.
ACC needed a bespoke Laboratory information management system creating, as the only alternatives were a manual process or reliance on a 3rd party piece of software that was unable to cater fully for automated and manual testing procedures.
The difficulties to overcome were to collect streamed data out of various testing instruments, combine these with manual testing processes, order management and stock control of strictly controlled batch processes. Secure authorization and controlled workflow for people as well as processes throughout the whole lifecycle.
The system was required to track and control the use of authorized samples and batches of testing materials as well as production of testing results from both streamed data and manual results.
This all had to be encompassed in a single database application, intergrated with an active directory environment .
Several weeks were spent discussing and analyzing the solutions architecture and preparing initial designs and specification documents
A windows form based database application was created using C# DotNet and Microsoft SQL Server 2005. Classes to accept streamed data from testing instruments were written and had to handle possible breaks in communication or inconsistent delivery speeds). This data was re-factored from the database store and presented in Crystal Reports based documents. Authorization and control to the application relied upon a custom security model integrated with Active Directory. SQL 2005 was chosen because of its reliability, speed and automation facilities.
Throughout the development process, continual involvement and dialogue with ACC as well as periods of intensive user testing took place to evolve the product to a highly usable state.
The end result was a considerable increase in operational efficiency and control
